ICYMI: Latino Civic Engagement Org Eliminates $130 Million in Medical Debt for Nearly 130,000 Hardworking Nevadans

New Seeds of Relief program delivers direct economic relief as healthcare costs and daily expenses continue to skyrocket

LAS VEGAS, NV — Last week, as healthcare costs continue to skyrocket and health insurance premiums are expected to rise, Somos Votantes Education Fund announced nearly 130,000 hardworking Nevadans in Clark and Washoe Counties had over $130 million in medical debt eliminated through its new Seeds of Relief program, launched in partnership with Undue Medical Debt.

This relief comes as hardworking families across the country face impossible choices between paying for care or covering rent and groceries. The program eliminated $128.9 million in medical debt for 124,916 people in Clark County and an additional $4.9 million for 3,660 in Washoe County.

"Too many hardworking families are one medical emergency away from financial crisis – that ended for over 128,000 hardworking Nevadans" said Melissa Morales, President and Founder of Somos Votantes Education Fund. "Through Seeds of Relief, we're proving that direct action can deliver real relief. This is about giving families breathing room to build their futures without the crushing weight of medical bills they never chose. And this is just the beginning — we're committed to expanding this work because every family deserves the chance to thrive, not just survive."

Starting the week of November 24th, qualifying community members will receive a branded letter from Undue Medical Debt indicating which debt has been eliminated. There was no application process — eligible recipients will simply open their mailboxes to find out their debt is gone. Recent national polling by Undue Medical Debt highlights the growing healthcare affordability crisis, with nearly half of respondents (45%) struggling to afford common medical expenses and more than one-third (35%) carrying medical debt.

The first wave of medical debt relief will culminate in a community-wide celebration event during the first week of December in Las Vegas. This initiative is part of Seeds of Relief, Somos Votantes Education Fund's new program aimed at delivering direct economic relief to working people through medical debt elimination, resource connections, and policy advocacy.

This relief builds on Somos Votantes' year-round commitment to empowering working families through community engagement across the country. From door-to-door conversations to community gatherings and celebrations, Somos connects with hardworking people where they are, addressing the economic concerns that matter most to their daily lives.
