Somos' Melissa Morales Condemns Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

Somos Votantes demands immediate accountability and calls for ICE to cease operations that terrorize communities

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the fatal shooting of Renee Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, released the following statement:

"Renee Nicole Good was killed by ICE in her own neighborhood in Minneapolis – federal agents took a life in the very community they claim to be protecting. What we are witnessing is an unconscionable escalation of violence perpetrated by federal immigration agents and backed by an administration that asks us to ignore what we are seeing. This tragedy is a stark reminder of what happens when ICE operates unchecked and without accountability. The question is not whether this has gone too far – but how much longer are we expected to accept this violence as normal. Rather than bringing our nation together in this troubling moment, the President and this administration continue to fan the flames with dangerous rhetoric that exploits fear and deepens division. We stand with local leaders calling for ICE to leave Minneapolis and cease these destabilizing operations. Congress must also step up, conduct real oversight, and hold ICE and DHS accountable for placing communities in danger. There is no justification for the level of violence that continues to be used against our communities, and our hearts are with Renee Nicole Good’s family and loved ones as they grieve this tragic and unjust loss."
