WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration's attempt to end automatic birthright citizenship, upholding a constitutional guarantee enshrined in the 14th Amendment for over 150 years. In response, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, released the following statement:

"Today the Constitution won. The Supreme Court has reaffirmed what has always been true — that every child born on American soil is fully and unconditionally American, regardless of who their parents are.

But let's be clear: this should have never seen the inside of a courtroom. The 14th Amendment was enshrined in our Constitution precisely to ensure that no politician could ever decide who among those born in this country is worthy of citizenship. No president gets to decide who is “American enough” to deserve U.S. citizenship – and today, the Court agreed.

Trump's crusade against birthright citizenship was always unconstitutional. It sought to erase over 150 years of settled constitutional law and was designed to make Latino families and immigrant communities feel unwelcome in the only country many have ever called home. This was never just about immigration, but about exclusion. Today’s ruling makes clear that our Constitution does not allow politicians to decide who belongs. While this ruling is a victory, it is not the end of this fight. This administration will continue to look for every possible way to target our communities and divide Americans, and we will be there to fight back every single time. That is our promise to our community."
