LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Somos PAC, a Latina-led organization focused on persuading and mobilizing Latino voters in key battleground states, including Nevada, celebrates the historic re-election of Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, the first and only Latina in the U.S. Senate, effectively handing control of the U.S. Senate over to Democrats. Sen. Cortez Masto ran a campaign focused on fighting to lower prices and creating more economic opportunities for Nevada’s working people, including hardworking Latinos, to build a goodlife for themselves and their families.

“Nevada’s hard working Latino voters helped deliver the U.S. Senate for Democrats by pushing Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto across the finish line,” said Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos PAC. “Despite a challenging economic and political environment, Latinos came out for Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, now the first and only Latina in our nation’s history to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate. Latino voters continue to be the margin of victory for Democrats like Sen. Cortez Masto because they know Democrats care about people like them and will fight to deliver more opportunities.”

“This is a great victory not only for Nevada’s working families, including Latinos, but for working families across the country,” said Cecia Alvarado, Nevada Executive Director of Somos PAC. “We helped elect the first and only Latina to the U.S. Senate in 2016 and today, we have succeeded in making sure La Senadora Catherine Cortez Masto returns to the Senate. We are very proud of the incredible work we have been able to do in Nevada to help deliver the U.S. Senate to Democrats. We look forward to investing even more in our Latino community and will do everything we can to make sure our families have the tools and opportunities they need to fully participate in our democracy.”

Somos PAC, which ran programs that focused on educating Latino voters about the midterm elections, informing them about where candidates stand on the issues that matter and ensuring that they vote, spent $8.9 million on voter outreach programs in Nevada. The programs included robust investments in door-to-door canvassing, community organizing, a bilingual mail program that reached hundreds of thousands of households and paid Spanish and English-language TV, radio and digital outreach.

Additionally, its sister organization, Somos Votantes, ran active non-partisan programs in states educating voters about when, where, and how to vote, hearing from Latino voters about what policies would make the biggest difference in their lives and advocating for various ballot measures including increasing the minimum wage. Somos Votantes spent an additional $4.8 million on Latino voter education efforts in Nevada.

In total, both groups made over 1 million attempts at the doors in Nevada and conducted tens of thousands of one-to-one conversations with voters.
