ICYMI: Somos Hosts Community Soccer Tournament in Kalamazoo
Economic empowerment event brought together hardworking families through sports while connecting them with essential resources and community support
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, Somos Votantes partnered with El Concilio to host a community soccer tournament at Let’s Play Soccer in Kalamazoo, bringing together nearly 30 teams from local mid-to-low level soccer teams for a day of competition, connection, and resource sharing. The event provided direct support to address economic and environmental concerns while celebrating the strong cultural traditions that unite Latino communities in Michigan.
The United League of Futbol tournament connected sports, economic empowerment, and environmental awareness, providing attendees with snacks, sport drinks and $50 gift cards and opportunities to learn about sustainable practices alongside economic development programs.
"Soccer brings our community together in a way that creates natural opportunities to discuss the issues that matter most to working families – from economic stability to environmental health," said Diego Cano, Michigan Program Manager for Somos. "Partnering with El Concilio allowed us to reach teams across Kalamazoo's soccer leagues while connecting sports, economic empowerment, and environmental awareness in one powerful community event."
The gathering continues Somos' nationwide commitment to empowering Latino families through culturally relevant programming that addresses economic concerns while celebrating the traditions and connections that strengthen Latino communities across Michigan.
