Somos’ Melissa Morales Condemns Deployment of Troops to Los Angeles, Militarized Raids and Assault on Labor Leader
Somos demands immediate release of SEIU USWW president David Huerta
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday night, President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard after military-gear-clad ICE agents launched aggressive raids throughout Los Angeles on Friday, targeting working people, including hardworking immigrants and injuring SEIU United Service Workers West President David Huerta during his detainment while defending workers. In response, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, released the following statement:
"Somos Votantes strongly condemns the deployment of troops to communities across Los Angeles by President Trump after the administration itself launched aggressive militarized raids that terrorized working people, including hardworking immigrants, sowing mass chaos and sending ripple effects across the country. The unconscionable assault and detention of SEIU United Service Workers West President David Huerta while he was peacefully defending worker rights will not be met with silence. The image of military-gear-clad federal agents injuring and arresting a respected labor leader while he was advocating for the very workers who power our economy represents a dangerous escalation in attacks on many in our communities and highlights the growing disconnect between working people and the President’s chaotic agenda. We demand the immediate release of David Huerta and an end to this terror."
