Somos’ Melissa Morales on Trump’s Chaotic first 100 Days: “Latino families across the country are already feeling the pain of his disastrous economic policies”
Trump’s 100th day in office is marked by plummeting consumer sentiment, home sales falling to the lowest levels since 2009, and a negative first quarter GDP report
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following President Trump’s 100th day in office and the latest GDP report showing the U.S. economy decreased 0.3 percent in the first quarter of 2025, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, shared the following statement:
“It’s been 100 days of Trump’s second term and Latino families across the country are already feeling the pain of his disastrous economic policies. In just 100 days, President Trump tanked consumer confidence, hammered working families with higher costs, and sent GDP down into the negatives through his chaotic tariffs. The verdict from Latino voters? A damaging majority rating the U.S. economy as poor. This isn’t an economy that works for working people – it’s Latino families watching their disposable income plummet as early data shows an alarming 3.9% drop in March, forcing them to dip into their savings just to cover skyrocketing tariff-driven costs.”
“The economic chaos Trump created is just warming up — he’s gearing up to pass sweeping tax cuts for the ultra wealthy and his billionaire friends, funded by gutting Social Security and Medicaid – lifelines to working families. At Somos, we believe in an economy that works for all families and we’re on the ground, side-by-side with hardworking people, fighting for a fair and secure future that’s within reach for everyone.”
In March, Somos Votantes released a poll reflecting deep economic anxieties felt by Latinos across the country. Economic issues are at the forefront of Latino voters’ minds, with 67% rating the U.S. economy as poor and only 14% saying they live comfortably. The poll also showed that Latino voters view Trump’s economic record as a significant liability: 63% believe he prioritizes the wealthy over working families, and his handling of the economy has resulted in a net -13 disapproval rating.
