WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following news that House Republicans passed President Trump’s tax bill, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, shared the following statement:

"While everyday people were promised on the campaign trail that Trump and Republicans would lower costs and make the economy work for working people, the truth is they just favor the ultra-wealthy and are willing to leave working families behind. This bill doesn’t offer relief—it will drive up the cost of essentials like groceries, rent, and healthcare, making it even harder for working families, including hardworking Latinos, to get by. For those already struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living, it’s a punch that will only deepen economic insecurity.‍

Behind all these empty promises is a dangerous reality and an uncertain future: this bill slashes critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP, and hands massive tax breaks to billionaires making record profits while working families foot the bill. 

This isn’t a win for working people choosing between rent and groceries, or buried in medical debt with nowhere to turn. These are the people Somos stands with every day—the ones House Republicans have pushed aside to benefit their billionaire buddies. Americans deserve a tax system that invests in everyday people, not billionaires. A strong economy starts by lifting up the many, not enriching the few.”

‍In March, Somos Votantes released a poll reflecting deep economic anxieties felt by Latinos across the country. Economic issues are at the forefront of Latino voters’ minds, with 67% rating the U.S. economy as poor and only 14% saying they live comfortably. The poll also showed that Latino voters view Trump’s economic record as a significant liability: 63% believe he prioritizes the wealthy over working families, and his handling of the economy has resulted in a net -13 disapproval rating.
