Trump's Massive Tax Giveaway to Billionaires Deeply Unpopular with Latino Voters
Somos polling shows Latino voters overwhelmingly oppose healthcare cuts for tax giveaways
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following President Trump's signing of the tax and spending bill into law, Somos Votantes is sounding the alarm about its devastating consequences for Latino families' healthcare access. The final bill delivered a $1 trillion-plus cut to health care programs and could lead to an estimated 11.8 million people losing their insurance. In response, Melissa Morales, Founder and President of Somos Votantes, released the following statement:
"Latinos aren’t buying it. Our latest poll shows Latino voters overwhelmingly oppose Trump’s massive tax giveaway to billionaires — with independent Latino voters disapproving even more.
Trump’s new law hurts working families. It slashes vital programs like Medicaid, driving up costs and putting health care out of reach for millions. Once again, this administration is prioritizing the ultra-wealthy over the rest of us. Latino voters have been crystal clear: they want lower costs, better opportunities, and a fair shot — not a rigged system that strips away their health care."
Somos Votantes recently released new polling data finding that opposition to Trump's tax bill among Latino voters has grown significantly since February, with net disapproval jumping from -20 to --28 overall and reaching 70% disapproval among Latino independents. The data also shows 53% of Latino voters are very concerned by Trump and Congressional Republicans’ plans to cut Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Other key findings from the poll include:
- Views on the economy remain bleak. A majority of Latino voters (64%) continue to rate the U.S. economy as ‘poor,’ and 56% believe the economy is getting worse under Trump.
- Trump’s standing among Latino voters has declined sharply across all measures since February. His favorability rating worsened from -12 to -17, his job approval sank from -11 to -18, and his economic approval dropped from -13 to -20. This significant deterioration in his job approval is especially steep among Latino independents, crashing from -6 to -28 and Latina women, falling from -22 to -35.
- Frustration dominates Latino voters’ views, seven-in-ten express negative emotions (70%) when asked how they feel about the current direction of the country.
- Latino voters continue to believe Trump and Republicans are not focused on their concerns – the cost of living, the economy, Social Security and Medicare. A majority saying Trump is focused on the wrong things (56%).
